autObarn SuperHatch – Round 1: Zwartkops Raceway – Tuesday 21 March 2017

autObarn SuperHatch - 2017SuperHatch as part of the Extreme Festival at Zwartkops, was not a disappointment by any means with the pace and determination being shown from the very start, with 21 cars taking to the tarmac for round 1 all with sheer determination and ready for the new season.

Qualifying:

Saw the class A brigade set a super-fast pace with Jonathan Du Toit (TAR Honda Civic) setting a very quick time of 1.13:576, ahead of Brett Garland (autObarn/Jonnesway Honda Civic), and Chris Davison (Opel SuperBoss)

Class B saw the 2016 class B and overall champion Nic Martin (RDG Opel Kadett) again start his season on a high note with a fast 1.16:772 lap time, ahead of Zane van Zyl (Credit Guarantee/JR Panel Beaters VW Golf MK2), and a welcome return to our very own celebrity driver Marius Roberts (Peugeot 207)

Class C had the lady ‘bug’ of Robyn Kruger (Kalex/Ukubila Ford KA) set a lap time of 1.19:290, ahead of new comer Craig Priestley (Tactical Fluid Ford Laser)

Race 1:

Race 1, and by the exit of turn 3, there was a big cloud of red dust, with Garland in the infield after him and du Toit had a coming together, Du Toit went on to win the race with Davison in 2nd and Karel Stols (PTA Noord Toyota Run X) taking the 3rd spot on the podium.

Class B saw Martin take the lead from the start and stay there, while the rest of the class B brigade battled behind him, but it was Louis Scholtz in his newly built (Car Care Clinic Honda Civic) took the 2nd spot, while van Zyl rounded up the top 3.

Class C saw Kruger mixing it with the mid pack of class B, Priestley, first time out with his newly acquired ‘old’ SuperHatch car took the 2nd spot.

Race 2:

With the reverse grid based on finishing order of race 1, it always makes for very exciting racing particularly in the first few laps… but it was Garland who took the win after a huge group effort of getting his damage from race 1 repaired and ensured it was still as fast as always, he finished ahead of du Toit and Davison.

In class B, Martin had a getaway fire extinguisher which rolled under the brake pedal and resulted in a multi vehicle pileup into turn 2 of lap 1, and caused a red flag, due to some stricken cars and medical vehicle on track to ensure all was fine with the drivers, but then from the re-start to the line was Martin who got the double win, from Roberts, and van Zyl

In class C, Again it was Kruger who got the win from Priestley.

Overall Results:

Class A: Jonathan du Toit, Chris Davsion, Karel Stols

Class B: Nic Martin, Marius Roberts, Zane van Zyl

Class C: Robyn Kruger, Craig Priestley
