autObarn SuperHatch – Round 2: RedStar Raceway – Saturday 29 April 2017

autObarn SuperHatch - 2017SuperHatch ventured to the misty, cold Delmas circuit this past weekend for round 2 of the 2017 championship.

The mist settled in as it does in that part of the world and the day ended up starting 45 minutes late due to zero visibility, but once the day got underway, the racing was hot as always.

Qualifying:

Qualifying saw the usual contenders setting the pace, Jono du Toit (TAR Honda Civic) was quickest, ahead of Brett Garland (autObarn/Jonnesway Honda Civic) and Karel Stols (PTA Noord Toyota Run X) taking the 3rd spot on the grid for the A’s, in class B it was all about Nic Martin (RDG Opel Kadett) ahead of Robyn Kruger (Steamsure/Kalex Ford Ka) and Zane van Zyl (Credit Guarantee MK2 Golf), class C was a quiet affair with Priestley breaking his toy and not able to start and Jaen Clark in his Corsa only getting a few laps in for the day.

Race 1:

And from the lights on and off, it was the battle of the Civics that resumed from round 1… du Toit and Garland fought at every turn (and at RSR there are a LOT) and every lap, and never let one another get to far away, they finished in the order they started and Stols took the final podium step.

In class B van Zyl had some misfortune off the start and parked with a gearbox, and gear linkages not selecting gears. Martin got his head down in the class B Field and ensured he got the chequered flag before the rest of the class B’s could, it was Andre Dannhauser (Pro Rubber Opel Corsa) who took the 2nd spot and Kruger in her Ford that took the 3rd spot

Race 2:

Race 2 du Toit and Garland, this time round, swopped some paint and positions but in the end Jono just managed to take the flag from Brett, (but Brett set a new lap record) and the 3rd spot on the podium went to new comer to class A, Tyler Scott (Jestik Opel Kadett)

In class B Martin crashed out and van Zyl got tagged at the end of the spin, but could thankfully carry on, and Dannhauser got his head down and took the win from lady racer Kruger, van Zyl did well to recover and hold on to third place.

Rookie drivers Trevor Stringer had a great outing with some good pace and just missed the podium in both races.

While Sandro Godhino set a blistering lap, but it was just a little too much for his bodies engine and he was air lifted to hospital, where they did a superb job of getting new parts fitted and he now has a heart that is good as new again.
