Round 1 of the Championship – Zwartkops 21 February 2015

The Leisure Grass / Northern Bolt & Tool SuperHatch championship started its season at their home turf this past Saturday 21 February with a slightly smaller field than usual, but the racing was as close and exciting as always.

In qualifying Jonathan du Toit (TAR Honda Civic) set the pace with a very quick 1:14.291 ahead of Werner Pieterse (Pieterse Racing/IDG/ Valhalla Spares Golf Mk1) and rounding up the top three was Jeffrey Kruger (Steamsure Combustion Polo)

Class B saw Nic Martin (RDG Opel Kadett) start the year the way he ended 2014 with a 1:17.351 ahead of surprise 2nd quickest Zane van Zyl and Peter Lotter rounding up the top 3.

Class C saw the ADL Roofing Ford Fiesta of Andre De Lange go quickest with a very quick 1:18.128 ahead of Robert Stoltz (Lopec Used Spares Opel Kadett) and 3rd went to Melanie Spurr (G & H / Castrol / AKA / Wealth Ave Corsa).

In race 1 Jonathan didn’t have a great start and Werner and Brett Garland (Jonnesway / Auto Barn / Mag Lube Honda Civic) capitalised and had a scuffle up front, while Jono still managed to hold onto 3rd place in the end.

In class B Nic Martin got ahead and stayed ahead, leaving Morne Human (Opel Kadett) to battle out with Jono Konig (Northern Bolt & Tool Peugeot 206), with van Zyl battling with clutch issues and Lotter not making the start.

Class C’s De Lange got away and ensured he dominated the class ahead of Stoltz and Spurr who battled for the full race when with half a lap to go Stoltz took 2nd place from Spurr.

 

Race 2 grid and the usual top 5 reversal per class.

Class A pole went to Hilton van Nieuwenhuizen (ASAP Citroen C2) with Jeff Kruger alongside him and du Toit rounding up the top 3. Jonathan went from start to finish ahead of the pack, with Pieterse, Garland and van Nieuwenhuizen swopping places throughout. The flag went to du Toit from Pieterse and Garland.

 

Class B’s grid had Ishmael Baloyi (TAR Honda Civic) on pole with the top 5 reversal with Zane alongside and Jono Konig taking the 3rd spot. Again Martin wasted no time in getting to the front, along with Human and Baloyi, while Zane had problems and Konig dropped back to 4th.

 

In class C, Sammy G (Forklia connections /ASAP Peugeot 206) was on the front row with Tony Hyams (Building Code Ford Fiesta) and Spurr in third, De Lange had another great start and got to the front ahead of Stoltz and Spurr, then Hyams got past and took third spot.

 

Results:

  • Class A: Werner Pieterse, Brett Garland, Jonathan du Toit
  • Class B: Nic Martin, Morne Human, Jonathan Konig
  • Class C: Andre De Lange, Robert Stoltz, Melanie Spurr

The next round will take place at MAHEM (Oval track) on Saturday the 7th of March.
