The Leisure Grass SuperHatch put on a great show at the annual Sasol Race Day this past weekend with a big field and super close racing action.
In qualifying it was Hilton van Nieuwenhuizen (ASAP Citroen C2) that put in the quickest lap, ahead of Jono du Toit (TAR Honda Civic) and Werner Pieterse (Pieterse Racing/IDG/Valhalla Golf)
Class B’s fastest man was Morne Human (X35/Sydsen Golf) ahead of the Northern Bolt & Tool Peugeots of the Konig brothers Jono and Stuart.
Class C saw a welcome return to Jacques van der Zee (Tugwell tooling Citroen C2) ahead of rookie driver Andre Dannhauser (Opel Corsa) and Mel Spurr (Castrol/G & H/Turn 1/AKA Opel Corsa) taking up the last spot.
Race 1 and the reversed grid from the last outings results, saw the front row of class A very different to the actual qualifying, the cars spread out a little quickly but the pace set was fast… the line honours went to Brett Garland (Jonnesway/AutoBarn/Mag Lubric Honda Civic) ahead of the Citroen C2 of van Nieuwenhuizen and du Toits Honda.
Class B saw two new drivers join the series young Ethan van Heerden (Ford Fiesta) and Chris van der Westhuizen (CMS industrial Golf), while the race lead was taken by Human early on, and the fight for the other steps on the podium had the Konig siblings in their Peugeots.
In class C it was lady racer Mel Spurr who got to the front in no time taking Jacques and Andre Dannhauser with her…the three had a battle royale, but it was Spurr that got the flag ahead of the boys, fitting for woman’s day weekend.
Race 2 – and in class A The racing was a lot tighter than the first race of the day and eventually it was Pieterse who took the flag ahead of Garland and van Nieuwenhuzien in a battle throughout the full 8 laps.
Class B saw Nic Martin (RDG Opel Kadett) finally making the first start of any session for the weekend and taking the win ahead of the Human and the eldest Konig brothers Stuart.
Class C’s Ford Fiesta man Andre De Lange made it out on track after a gearbox change and got the lead after a small incident where class C got held up in turn 2 and he got the clear line, he took the flag ahead of van der Zee and Spurr.
Results:
Class A: Brett Garland, Hilton van Nieuwenhuizen, Werner Pieterse
