SuperHatch took to the Kyalami circuit for the first time this year as part of the Extreme Festival and ALL the cars had a red rhino horn somewhere on their vehicle in support of the rhinos and against the poaching of them. A small token from our side and a small gesture that we all love South Africa and our game.
Despite the chilly weather a great number of spectators came to watch round 3 of the SuperHatch championship and round 2 of the Extreme Festival.
Friday saw a number of drivers have engine problems which, unfortunately, resulted in a few withdrawals. However, there were still 26 cars that went out to warm up for the race.

The usual top 5 per class grid reversal from the previous race always keeps things exciting; in class A Pierre Lubbe in the Harness co/Trio Racing Audi A3 was on pole. Chris Davison in the Briggs replica Opel Superboss who should have been alongside him was sent to the back of class for being underweight after qualifying, so instead Tugwell was on the front row with van Nieuwenhuizen in 3rd and Garland alongside him. Off the line all the cars got away well, with Davison getting into the bunch by turn 1 with Mel Spurr and Mark du Toit in the mix as well.

Tugwell got a little out of shape into turn 3 and the brave keep it flat while others backed off a little, Tugwell maintained the lead and Garland and van Nieuwenhuizen were on his rear bumper, the racing stayed close and du Toit was there too, Lubbe and Davison had dropped off the lead pack and Spurr and Joubert were trailing them with Shaun Besteman having to make up from a bad start, eventually Garland won out from van Nieuwenhuizen and Tugwell came home in third. |

Class B had the front row similar to the qualifying due to the reversal from the previous round and Baloyi was on pole ahead of Martin, with Jaco Kriel (CIR Customs/Impact gearboxes Opel Superboss) in third and Lotter in 4th; they all had a battle for the full 8 laps and they were the top 4 across the line with Kriel taking the win from Martin and Baloyi, with the young guns Chad Ten Doeshcate and Jono Konig in their MK1 VW Golfs battling throughout the race.
Class C’s grid saw the Golf of Fuller take the first row alongside him was lady racer Louise van der Walt in her the Car King Ford Fiesta with Marius Roberts third and van der Zee alongside him. Away they went and despite not being able to set a lap in qualifying in the morning after getting stuck in the kitty litter (in her hello kitty car) Louise made sure the boys knew she meant business and lead for just about the entire race, Fuller came home in 2nd and van der Zee in third, Roberts had a fuel supply problem and the rest of the class battled hard with one another.

Race 2

Lubbe, in his gold Audi, was on pole again this time with du Toit alongside him in his Trans Africa Honda Civic and Tugwell and van Nieuwenhuizen on the 2nd row. Guest driver Greg Moloney was in the 2nd of the ASAP Peugeot’s had a monster of a jump start and was just about in the lead before the lights went off, but class A boys and girls don’t let that catch them, they had all pounced on him by turn 3 and into Sunset he lost it and how everyone missed him is still a mystery but we all did, and the race was on… Van Nieuwenhuizen had got to the front and lead until the very last corner on the last lap, when Garland got past and took the double for the day, van Nieuwenhuizen had to settle for 2nd and Tugwell another 3rd from du Toit in 4th and Lubbe in 5th place.

Class B’s front row had youngster Ten Doeshcate in his Golf alongside Lotter and behind them was Baloyi and Martin. A great start from Lotter saw him get to the front of class B within no time and with class B being so close to the off of Moloney they also all had to do what they could to miss him in Sunset, and they did…PHEW…. By now Lotter had pulled a small gap and the race was on between Martin and Baloyi who had very little between them. Lotter held on for the win ahead of Martin with Baloyi in 3rd Ryan Quan-Chai in 4th and race one winner Kriel rounding up the top 5.
Class C saw another lady on the front row; this time it was Alta van Wyk in her mk1 Golf alongside Pieter Pienaar in his mk 2 VW Golf and behind them was van der Zee and Fuller, Roberts who started way back after a bad first heat, came through the field in no time and battled hard with van der Walt. Fuller also wasn’t letting them get away and van der Zee was hanging onto them, the battle was intense and with the battle mixing it with the class B cars too also added to the excitement, but it was Roberts who took the flag from van der Walt in 2nd, Fuller was 3rd, Jacques 4th and Pienaar came home 5th in class.
